Some blog-related news

I realize I've been posting a lot about cake desserts lately, but for those of you who want to see more variety, you're in luck. I've been asked to write a column for Cupcakes Take the Cake, so starting in May, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the Cupcake Thighs column, written by yours truly.

I'll still be posting on Puff and Choux, but since I'll be covering cupcakes on the other site, I'll be focusing more of my energies on other desserts here. I'm feeling really good about this new writing gig and can't wait to meet all of the Cupcakes Take the Cake readers!

Thanks for popping over to learn more about popovers

My good pal Amanda sent me a link today for a story about popovers, and I just had to share it as I feel it does a fantastic job of showing how much food (of course this example is specifically pastry-affiliated) and the community surrounding the industry means to people.

This article ran in last week's New York Times Magazine and was authored by Amanda Hesser, She recalls the story of when she e-mailed David Lebovitz, a Chez Panisse pastry chef reincarnated into a cookbook author and blogger based in Paris. Hesser had revisited a popover recipe by Maida Heatter, which originally appeared in the Times in 1966 with an article by Craig Clairborne, and was curious if Lebovitz had every attempted it.

Lebovitz's repsonse?

“I love Maida Heatter. In fact, in my desk drawer I have a handwritten letter she sent me that is one of my favorite, most cherished possessions. It traveled from San Francisco to Paris with me!”

The article goes on to give a bit of background and history on the popover, including baking techniques. You should check it out here.

Legendary New York City baker honored for six decades of service

The New York Times ran a great piece today about Eddie Adams, a baker who spent 63 years whipping up cakes and pies for Primeburger, a diner on the Upper East Side of New York City.

Mr. Adams retired last year, and to honor all of his hard work and dedication over the past six decades, the owners of Primeburger will present him with a plaque next month.

To read the full article, check out the The City section in today's New York Times, or by visiting here.

My favorite part of the article was the quote from Mr. Adams at the end. In regard to how he felt about his 60 plus years of service, he simply said,"“If you put your heart and soul to it, you know how to do it.”

Even though you won't be able to taste the delicious desserts created by Mr. Adams, you should still visit Primeburger:

The pleasing sight of cake aesthetics.

As much as I appreciate taste, a well designed dessert is just as important to me. Let's be honest - no one wants to eat something that's ugly. Would you want to stick something in your mouth when your first visual reaction is "Ehhh...is that edible?"

In honor of beautiful cakes, check out this slide show at Bon Appétit.com

First Lady Michelle Obama sings the praises of eating healthy - The New York Times

There was an interesting article in The New York Times' Dining & Wine section yesterday talking about First Lady Michelle Obama's stance on eating healthy and encouraging the country to follow the First Family's example.

It's so refreshing to finally see healthful eating at the top of the agenda these days. Although this blog is about desserts and pastries, I'm all for a well-balanced diet...just with an occasional sweet treat thrown in every now and again...or every day...I exercise a lot! Leave me alone!

Hoever, my favorite part of the article was one of the photos included, which features Michelle Obama standing in front of a platter that doesn't look like it's adorned with broccoli and fresh vegetables. Now I'm no expert, but I'm pretty certain that whatever those pink things were, they didn't come from a farmer's market...

First Lady Obama was also featured in the Times a few weeks ago when she invited a group of culinary students from L’Academie de Cuisine in Gaithersburg, Maryland to the White House for a kitchen tour prior to the annual state dinner. You can read the full article here.

Just when I think I can't love the First Family any more, they win my heart over by showing love to the foodie community and the hardworking culinary students of the world. The Obama family continues to inspire me every day, and considering how things are going, I'm waiting for one of them to show up at my front door with a cupcake from sugar Sweet sunshine and puppy and say to me,"Thanks for writing about us on your blog." They just seem THAT friendly.

Have a foodie blog you would like me to link to?

If you are one of my foodie blog brethren and would like me to include a link to your blog under Puff and Choux's Favorites (located on the right hand side of this blog), let me know. Either e-mail me at puffandchoux@gmail.com or leave your blog's site address in the comments section. I'm more than happy to spread the love!
